- What is WootTV?
- WootTV is where fans of Woot can gather every night before the new woot item is released. Depending on your host for the evening, there can be discussions over past woot items, random talk or games to play as we wait for the new woot. There is also the occasional BoC or mystery item opening.
- Well, what’s woot.com?
- Woot.com is a deal a day site that releases a new item every evening at 12 AM Central time. Visit this page for more information on the site we hold close to our hearts.
- So that means you work for Woot?
- Nope. This is simply a fan site created by our beloved founder Mike. No one here is affiliated with Woot in anyway, not even the hosts. We’re just simply just a bunch of crazy Woot fans.
- There’s more than one host?
- Yes. In June 2008, Mike got a new job, which meant he didn’t have quite as much freedom to stay up late at night and play. So that he could go to bed at a reasonable hour, he began inviting some of his longtime viewers who also broadcast on JTV to take over WootTV during the week. In September of 2008, it extended to daily scheduled hosts so that our beloved founder Mike and the wonderful witespy would not be overworked. The current schedule is listed on the top banner of the WootTV site.
- Why are you guys doing this? What’s the point?
- We do it for the love of Woot in case you haven’t gotten that yet. Mike wanted a place for Wooters to get together to chat and share that love for Woot… And pickles!!!
- When do you broadcast?
- Usually 30 minutes to the Woot every night – 9:30pm PST, 10:30pm MST, 11:30pm CST, and 12:30am EST. If you’d like to know every time WootTV starts broadcasting, simply follow Mike’s twitter here. Also, if you add WootTV as a favorite (by clicking on the heart underneath the video screen), you can be notified whenever WootTV is broadcasting either by a notice if you are already signed in on Justin.tv or by email.
- Why are the hosts screaming in horror and the chat is overjoyed about something called a Woot-Off?
- Well if you went and read what a Woot-Off was on the Woot site or you are a Wooter yourself, then you know that it’s where Woot continuously posts new products as they sell out from anywhere between 24 to 72 hours. That’s a reason to cheer, isn’t it? As for why the hosts are screaming in horror… Out of the goodness of their hearts and their love of Woot, WootTV will attempt to continue broadcasting throughout the Woot-Off to keep Wooters entertained and offer company as we all watch and wait for wanted items.
- Do the hosts other than Mike have their own channels I can watch?
- Of course. That is the joy of Justin.tv. If you scroll down the WootTV page, under the video screen in the Networks section you can click on “The WootTV Network” to see the various pages… Or you can be lazy and click here. There is even a Trivia channel sponsored by Hoopstick with a different set of hosts.
- What’s this nonsense about Hoopstick?
- Hoopstick.com is another deal a day site that sells something new every morning using dynamic pricing. For more information on Hoopstick, check this page.
- Does that mean you broadcast for Hoopstick too?
- Yep. HoopstickTV, here on WootTV, is hosted by troyaof and revycakes (with the occasional guest host) every morning – 7:30am PST, 8:30am MST, 9:30am CST and 10:30am EST.
- Why am I getting notices during the day about WootTV broadcasting and it’s not for HoopstickTV?
- Well, sometimes Mike likes to lifecast too. Usually it is either the Intersection Cam of an intersection in a private community or the Office Cam of Mike at work (no audio of course).
- Why did you ban me?
- You probably violated some of our rules of courtesy. Most likely it was rule #1 – No links without asking for permission or rule #5 – Do not insult other members/mods. To view the rules, type !custom rules in the chat. If you are a first time offender, a mod will usually un-ban you right away since that was your warning. A second time will result in a 10 minute time-out. If you were banned altogether, it’s because you were an asshat or dickknuckle. Choose your title because you are one of the two. Email Mike to plead your case.
- Do you have mods? Can I be a mod?
- Yes, there are mods. They can decide your fate, so don’t tempt fate. There are also possibly too many mods to even consider modding anyone else at this time.
- Where are the WootTV studios?
- Now that there are lots of hosts, it technically depends on where they are. Still, WootTV’s home and origin shall always be Gilroy, CA.
- How long ago did Mike start this?
- February 22, 2008
- Why did Mike start this?
- The answer written by the man himself – “During my daily therapeutic trance, the Flying Spaghetti Monster paid me a visit and spoke of a holy union between Justin.tv and Woot! – and it was good. So here we are.”
- Did I miss the Bandolier of Carrots?
- Check here. If you have no idea what that is, check here. If you did get one (or two or three), we’d absolutely LOVE for you to open it live during a broadcast! We’d heart you and hug you and adore you for it even! If you simply can't wait to open your BoC, we'd also love and appreciate it if you recorded the opening and send it to be shown on cast!
- Can I contact you outside of the broadcast?
- Yes – You can email Mike at woottv@gmail.com. If you’d like to contact anyone other than the founder, you may want to ask that person yourself.
- What kind of webcam are you using?
- The majority of the hosts use this one or other variations of the 9000.
- How are you doing that multiple screens/effects/words thing?
- We’re using webcammax.
- What program do you use to track the Woots? Who is the bot powered by?
- Why, we use Wootalyzer of course! Thank you wootalyzer!
- Why is the entire chat room filled with this “under/over” stuff?
- You’ve come across our Woot guess. Every night, 5 minutes before the new Woot item, everyone can enter in their guess for what it will be. Under/Over for whether it will be under or over $50, New/Refurb for whether it will be new or refurbished/reconditioned/recertified, Yes/No for whether or not a Woot-Off will begin. A correct guess results in a point being rewarded to you.
- What’s with the points thing?
- Thanks again to the mad coding skills of fan and friend wootalyzer, the chat rooms of members of the WootTV Network can now each keep track of points for visitors, viewers, friends, and successful contest participants! Only certain members have access to the points commands, but there are two that every visitor should know and be able to use. Type !points mine to see how many points you've accumulated in a room and type !points top to see the top 50 point holders in a given room. Just watch your favorite WootTV Network channel to learn about opportunities to earn points as well as to discover what having points could get for you!
NOTE: Typing those commands will yield different results depending on what room you're in when you type them. For example, if you did well in a recent round of Name That MIDI in thebobzone, you may have 13 points at http://www.wootalyzer.com/?pageid=wootalyzerbot&room=thebobzone. However, if you only just started showing up for Tribond Tuesdays in embiggened's room, you may find that you only have 2 points when you look at the Top Point Holders table at http://www.wootalyzer.com/?pageid=wootalyzerbot&room=embiggened.
Finally - ALWAYS remember the 5 Commandments of The Carp!!! –
THE HOLY CRAP COMMANDMENTS v2.0:
- Thou shalt expect nothing beyond one bag of some kind and your chosen quantity of crappy items (which should be THREE).
- Thou shalt not whine and complain when some people’s crap turns out to be nicer than yours.
- Thou shalt take a moment to consider whether you might be better off just not buying this crap.
- Thou shalt not order just one crap and blame it on anything but your own inattention.
- To paraphrase Stephen Stills, shalt thou not get the crap you want, want the crap you get.
